Interim

The presented visual materials tests the relation between classical and abstract representation of still-life and tulip bulbs with the use of water-based mediums. Exploring the transformation and symbolism lying in those bulbs. The start of this theme was in my graduation project back in Damascus, Syria. When I wanted to create visually appealing paintings focusing on still-life or floral scenes emphasizing tranquility and beauty. However, I also wanted to add depth and significance to the subject matter with the use of Dutch rich history and cultural symbols inspired by the bulbs role in the 1600s trade markets dynamics.
The development of the visual materials shows a process of exploration, portraying the bulbs in a traditional still-life compositions in a humble try to deliver peaceful, relaxing paintings. Furthermore, it reached an abstract expressive results emphasizing the bulbs warm earthy tones, organic forms, maintaining a contemporary approach where the bulbs seem to transform into fluid expressive forms, suggesting movement, transformation and opening the door for variety of interpretations.
The use of watercolors as the main medium plays an essential role in delivering the essence of the series with the gradual application of semi-transparent paint washes through the fluid brushstrokes hinting at the transformation lying in the subject matter, inviting the viewer to engage with the painting and to look for their own interpretation within the relation between color and form away from conventional settings.
During the progress of work and while delving more into the topic I began to appreciate not only the beauty of tulip bulbs, but also the profound symbolism and metaphorical significance in them. The bulb, a hidden entity with huge potential, serves as a symbol of growth, endurance, and transformation. The journey from a simple bulb to a blooming tulip one of the most beautiful flowers mirrors the cycles of life, the hardships and renewal, and reminds us that nothing is permanent and beauty can rise and grow from the darkest places or moments, a topic that resonates with personal and universal experiences.
By working on this series I tried to present the unseen potential within things, inviting the viewers to find their own interpretation and to reflect on their own experiences of transition and renewal, highlighting the potential beauty in life, no matter how small or hidden it might seem and engaging with the Dutch culture, not knowing that my journey will continue here in The Netherlands looking forward to the next chapter of life.
